Story highlights Author Naomi Wolf says recent controversies reveal biased views toward women's bodies The Pussy Riot trial and Arab Spring protests showed women stripped of autonomy Women's bodies are battlegrounds used to wage culture wars, Wolf says It's scandalous when women take ownership of their own bodies, Wolf contends. It seems as if we are in a time of unprecedented struggle over the meaning of women's bodies and sexuality. Controversy is swirling about an American University professor who breast-fed a baby in class ; topless photos of Kate Middleton have been released ; and a Time magazine cover showing a mother breast-feeding her toddler sparked even more tittering in May. It is not just the breast that is contested: Pussy Riot, the punk band, was sentenced to two years in a Russian prison after a staged performance in which they did high kicks that showed too much of their bodies. They tried, from prison, to explain "what pussy meant" and "what riot meant. Almost half a million girls have uploaded videos onto YouTube, inviting internet trolls to validate their appearances. That's almost half a million girls between the ages of 9 and 14 posting videos online asking strangers to assess whether they're pretty or ugly. And if the idea of young women fretting over the way they look isn't unsettling enough, just look at the comments they attract. They're part of an internet-savvy generation. They've seen the other videos.
Young love — especially when it's with the star of the football team — can make a girl crazy. In pre-Depression, small-town Kansas, good-girl Natalie Wood is so tortured by her sexual urges for beau Warren Beatty and conflicting pressure to be moral that she attempts suicide after a school dance and ends up in a sanitarium. It's the ultimate depiction of overwhelming first love, and — sorry, religious right — a chilling PSA against the dangers of teen abstinence. There are many reasons 10 Things I Hate About You stands the test of time better than most of its contemporaries in the glut of late '90s teen flicks, but we'll name two of them. For starters, child-star-made-good Joseph Gordon-Levitt turned in an understated, endearing performance as a lovelorn and totally undercover hot geek. The film also served as a breakout role for a then little-known Aussie named Heath Ledger, who sung, danced, and smirked his way into the heart of ice queen intellectual punk Kat Stratford Julia Stiles. That's without mentioning a stellar soundtrack, its brilliantly caricaturish deconstruction of high school cliquery, and a house party worthy of the name Bogey Lowenstein. Every generation has its variant on the girl-dresses-as-boy, girl-as-boy-falls-for-boy, boy-freaks-out tale. And this immensely fun, if minor, romp from the '80s perfectly captures the decade's raunch-lite spirit and funky fashion sense.
